Sup peoples.

I thought it might be a good idea to start a thread about movies that people have recently seen or upcoming films that people are interested in. I recently signed up for NetFlix and started looking for films to watch, but realized I have no idea what films are worth watching. I don't watch TV, so the only way I find out about a good film is through conversation and awards. I think we all have fairly similar tastes when it comes to entertainment, so this would be a good place to find out about good movies. Actually, I really just wanted to start a thread so that I could vent my frustratio recent films that disappointed me.

The Wrestler (2008) - This movie came highly recommended by a friend, and was very well received by critics (98% by Rotten Tomatoes)... but why? What-the-fuck was good about this movie? I generally like Daron Aronofsky's films (Requiem For a Dream, PI), but this was the bottom of the barrel in my opinion. I finished off a 2 liter bottle of Diet Coke just trying to stay awake while watching this movie. The plot sucked, and if the movie was supposed to be more about character development, then Mickey Rourke's performance would have been better suited for serial killer flick. Eh...

The Hurt Locker (2009) - I hadn't heard anything about this film until all of the recent Golden Globes and Academy Awards hype. Picked it up on Blue-ray as I assumed it was going to be a good action-packed drama (Saving Private Ryan) but it wasn't quite that at all. There were a few scenes that kept me on the edge of my seat, but I felt a bit disappointed while watching it. In fact, I almost turned it off half way through. And then the movie finished and I dawned on me...that was a good fucking movie. I liked it so much that I watched it again the very next day. I usually hate movies that end that way, but I really liked this film. Check it out if you can.

A Serious Man (2009) - I never heard about this film receiving a theatrical release, but I'm picking it up today from Best Buy. I've really enjoyed the last two Coen Brothers films (Burn After Reading and No Country For Old Men) so I think I'll pick this one up on faith. The fact that it has gotten decent scores doesn't hurt either.

I have Sukiyaki Western Django and Gomorrah coming in the mail today...

Hurt locker is an excellent movie. It's a different take on the average soldier compared to the other war movies out there. It's pretty nerve wrecking and suspenseful in all the scenes. I loved the car bomb scene, very intense moment while they were covering the EOD guy defusing. Overall, excellent movie and I recommend everyone watch it.

So I think Caprica has its faults, but I'm willing to forgive them all for the development of this one character... Tamara Adama.

I didn't think The Wrestler was horrible or anything, but it wasn't good either. Really nothing very special to it, very forgettable.

And yeah, I have my doubts about Caprica. Has anyone seen any of V? Opinions?

I saw the original V and was scared because I was like 9. Heard the new one sucked.

I haven't tried Caprica yet, but wtf, the main character is Adama's sister?????

that's not the main character. Hard to say that there is a main character, just like Battlestar.

Not as good as Battlestar, IMO. But it's only a few episodes in... I'm reserving judgement. I love certain parts of it, others not so much.

Ok, So I watched The Hurt Locker last night before the Oscars. Great film, very visceral, makes me uncomfortable to think about what what you faced on a daily basis in Iraq, Ghorbani.

I was very happy to see Hurt Locker beat Avatar for best director and best picture. Hurt Locker vs Avatar is the epitome of substance vs lack thereof.

Saw Shutter Island Saturday. Vulgar but good movie. Lots of metaphors and things you really have to pay attention to catch. Great imagery.
