Did Avatar win anything? I hope not. If it comes down to animated films Up > Avatar. If you watched Up with a significant other and didn't get choked up somewhere in there, you are a scarred, emotionless, hardass who drives big mechs with stupid big mech knives on alien planets killing everything in your path.

Anyone see the new Alice in Wonderland in 3d? I really wanted to see that.

Avatar won 3 things... think they were cinematography, visual effects, and art direction.

I would give it visual effects for sure. Cinematography is arguable. It shouldn't have won art direction, seeing how much of a ripoff it is. Up should have won art direction.

Up won best original score and best animated film.

I'd just like to mention that Cristoph Walz won best supporting actor for Inglorious Basterds - all is right with the world.

Christopher Waltz was fucking AWESOME in that movie. I was on the edge of my seat anytime he appeared.

Hollywood is in a slump. I can't believe best picture really came down to Avatar vs. The Hurt Locker. And since when the hell did Sandra Bullock become a good actress?

Shutter Island was pretty entertaining

Wait, which one is the awards where the winners seem to be randomly picked, Oscars or Emmies?

Doesn't Caprica seem a bit soap opera drama-esque to anyone? Methinks it needs a little Michael Bay-ness

George:
I watched Up under those conditions and did not cry, does that make me a cold, heartless betch?

I shed a tear at that beginning intro to UP. Very sad, no words, just tears. You know what else was a sad moment Ari? When Mufasa died. Very tragic. How bout when Bambi's mom got blasted away?

Titanic? I laughed when Leo died. The notebook? Nope

I guess visual effects, but really that's about it. It didn't really do anything else other than, "Oh that's pretty I guess". Even though everything felt to me as though it was pulled out of Magic the Gathering.
I'm glad Up beat Avatar. Gives me a little bit of hope that there is SOME justice in the world.
Up puts your soul on a choker chain and pulls it. Saddest thing EVER. Mufasa and Bambi put together don't compare to that. Pixar could float a boat on the tears that movie brought. I'm happy with those results. Avatar got the "pity prizes" IMO. Up should have won those too, but oh well.

Ponyo and 2012 both sucked btw.

2012, surprise surprise.

Ponyo, dubbed or subbed?
For me I find it rare to find many animes that sound good when dubbed. Exceptions would be Vampire hunter D and Cowboy Bebop.

I didn't find it very sad, more bitter-sweet. Yea, there was death but hey, it happens, son. Guy's lucky to even have something like that to cherish for so long.

My beef with Ponyo isn't with the voice acting, it's the story, I seriously cannot stand Hayao Miyazaki's films. Which hurts me because the animations are always beautiful. The stories are always horrible. I don't think Ill be watching any more of his films. That was the last straw for me. I don't want to spoil anything for anyone here.

I like 'em! They're nice and simple slice-of-life type of stuff.

Do you like Serial Experiments Lain?
I think you might like it.

Or peruse indie films, usually there's a gem or two that's pretty heavy in story content and really connected to what you see in the movie itself.

But if it's really just stories you're craving for there's a couple I think you might wanna check out.
