Hey, thought it would be a good idea to start a new thread regarding PC, gaming hardware... etc.

I'll start it out with this latest scoop on the new iPhone:

It looks nice and has some good hardware features (including front camera for video chat and flash for main camera). Still no hard keyboard. That's no longer a priority for me since I've gotten used to the on-screen one, but I wouldn't mind getting used to the hard ones so I could learn to type on it faster.

I think it has some good features. It all depends on what the new operating system is like now. That will be the make or break decision between another iPhone or a phone running Google's Android operating system (which is going to be hard to beat).

Looks like a nice phone. A lot less emasculating design. I do like the video chat option.

I'm pretty sure the guy that lost that phone, is now canned. Apple is very secretive on their stuff. Recently a guy tried to sell a staircase from an apple store and was hit with a cease and desist order. In Taiwan, the guy that lost some new apple product, was interrogated harshly and ended up committing suicide.

Next time we all meet up, remind me and we'll talk about the recent iPhone/iPad SDK debacle and Apple flipping Adobe the bird, haha. It's pretty funny. It actually has sealed the deal for me, that until things change, I will not buy a single Apple product again. No more iPods after my current nano dies.

The Apple of today is very much like the Microsoft of yesteryear. Microsoft learned, albeit slowly... but Gates and co never had the stance that Apple has, nor the stage presence, which may make it harder for Apple to change its ways. No way for me to be able to tell what kind of outcome this all will have.

I don't understand what's all the gripe about with flash. Some say its horribly written, other web developers condemn it. I don't have any beef with it. I say this is another ploy from apple to introduce a new standard for some kind of webbased animation. Since you do web development josh, what are your thoughts on flash

Apple's gripe with Flash is that it's a security hole. It has had security holes in the past, nothing that isn't patched quickly. Apple is pushing HTML 5 hard last I heard, but that isn't going to be the magic solution and flawlessly secure platform that people think it is going to be. (the world is much more complicated than the simplistic view that Steve Jobs presents to consumers).

That's really the quick explanation. There are more details, of course.

What's astounding to me is that Apple is so ready to flip Adobe the bird, when Adobe products on macs are part of where Apple's initial wave of this popularity came from.

Apple products are about control. I.e. you as the consumer have none, Jobs has everything. Some of the things they do are just utterly non-sensical to me. Their most recent SDK rules limited the languages that you can code in for iPhone to just C, C++, Native C, and one other I think. No Java, nothing else. They are completely ignoring the last decade and a half of development standards for their own ease, screwing over developers in the process. Simply amazing.

Well to even code for apple, you have to be apple certified. Which is pretty lame. Apple has always been a closed operating platform, basically making you have the BEST guided experience only with the programs they've developed and provide. That guided path can be nice for some, but for others that prefers an open development, then that's where windows and other platforms come in.

I didn't think about adobe being a popular product on the mac. That is a very good point. Hope it goes the way of Google in China

Isn't his holier than thou attitude just adorable? Read some of the first comments on that story for some extra hilarity. And the comments hit it pretty well too, that the whole "think of the children" argument is completely invalid on a smartphone. Load up the iPhone browser, and get your porn as easily as anything else.

Weren't we once talking about how the success of any new technology is closely tied to how well it serves as a vehicle for porn?

I think what is really driving Jobs and apple is this fear that they won't be able to stop Google. No one fucking can. So instead they are going back to pushing for that niche audience. They went mainstream for a while, but I guess it's back to doing what they do best: Appealing to the apple consumer.
