Maybe this is old news, but you can register on battle.net and use your old CD keys to register games with Blizzard.

I registered my Starcraft Battle Chest and am downloading the online version for it right now. I guess this way you don't have to use the original game CDs.

I'm also curious to see if this will give me access to the new Battle.net. I hear they have been upgrading in preparation for SC2.

So yeah, just a heads up to everyone to register and try it out. Maybe we can even get a few games of original Starcraft in before the sequel comes out.

Jesus Christ.

OK, finally got this to work on windows 7. First, register your game on

https://us.battle.net/

It will give you a link to the online installer. Let that run, it will rape your internet for about 3 hours so best to leave that while you do something else. Once it is done you can start the installation. It will ask you for your really long CD key. This is not the one you used to register the game on battle.net. You have to login to the online site (https://us.battle.net/) and click on "manage game" for starcraft. You get the CD key from that screen.

Once the installer runs, do NOT use the default save location. Just change it to the root directory (C:/), but whatever you do, do not use the default program files directory or it will not be able to apply updates because of permissions or something.

Once installed, login to battle.net from multiplayer and let it dl the update. Once it restarts you should be able to get online. Also, if you ever run the game, make sure to use the quick launch from your games folder in the start menu. Otherwise when you try to login to battle.net it says you have a virus (this one completely fucking baffles me. Looks like they are all pointing to the same executable. I don't see how it makes a difference.)

Oh, and nothing looks different to me. Maybe the updated battle.net is only for the new games.

Also, looks like all the old weird problems with graphics in the start up menu getting jacked up when you switch programs are still there. Nice to see it's a direct port. Guh.

... reminds me of why computer gaming back in the day was such a pain in the ass. Steam is a fucking godsend.

/friends add Harocaust (will add me to your friend list)

Post up your battle.net account names. I guess we should join U.S. East Server.

Andy this would be a good way to get Starcraft back on your box without a CD drive. How are you going to install sc2?

btw, you can fix the weird screen glitches for sc1 in windows 7 with the following trick:

Do the following:
1. create a SC shortcut (if don't have one already)
2. right-click the shortcut > Properties > Compatibilty
3. Tick 'Run in 256 colors', 'Run in 640 x 480 screen resolution' and 'Disable desktop composition'
4. Enjoy!

I probably won't be picking up SC2. I got a beta key and tried it, and I just still can't bring myself to enjoy RTS. It seems to be my one weak point.

However, I do have a Blizz RealID that will work across the Blizz games. I'll look up what it is when I get home.

I'll be picking up SC2. Sounds like everyone here will be, too. If you want some 8-player games, Harold, we should have some.

Oh, and this Battle.net shit is ridiculous. It shouldn't be this hard to install a damn game...

Well after doing some research... I'll give it a try.

However, before I purchase I'd like to watch someone play it. If I like the pace of multiplayer I'm game.
